Lunch at Rick Stein’s in Marlborough with a yummy Rueda Verdejo

The eponymous restaurant is housed in an attractive building in the charming town of Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. (Eve used to live here ~ 30 years ago!)

The welcome was friendly and first impressions of the interior very good.

We chose one of our fave Spanish white wines which we often drink when we are in Spain. (We lived there part-time for 5 years.) It’s called Rueda Verdejo, labeled as Rick’s Spanish white – highly recommended, although in the supermarkets, we pay ~ 1/5 of the price charged here! I know they need to mark up the wines but this seems a bit steep…
It paired well with all of the dishes we had.

We shared a starter of Baked Scallops with guindilla peppers, chorizo & crispy breadcrumbs and gave these 7/10. Very tasty but Eve (the chef in our relationship) felt they could have done with more sauce.

Main Courses

I chose the Indonesian curry with sea bass, hake & prawns, with basmati rice & a green bean & grated coconut salad with crisp fried shallots, garlic & chilli. 9.5/10. Tons of good fish in this & delicious flavours with a superb sauce. Salad was a little underwhelming otherwise it would have been a 10!

Oops-this isn’t my curry: it’s a tray of dishes waiting to be served at nearby tables. So mean to seat us here: kept our mouths watering the whole time!

Eve chose a Gratin a la Dieppoise with monkfish, mussels and prawns. 7/10.
Quite tasty but we felt it was a little bland for our taste. Lovely tender fish though.

For pudding, we shared a pud, which came highly recommended by our fun waiter, Callum H. It’s called Marlborough Pudding. 10/10.

 From Rick Stein’s website:
https://www.rickstein.com/introducing-the-marlborough-and-winchester-puddings/
“The Marlborough pudding, once a common meal in Wiltshire, has almost disappeared in the UK, though it remains popular in New England, thanks to the pilgrims who took it across the pond in the 17th century. A buttery pastry pie is filled with Bramley apple, eggs and cream, Fino sherry, cinnamon and nutmeg, finished with a glazed Italian meringue and served with warm custard”

Overall, an enjoyable experience. We even photographed the loos (restrooms / bathrooms) & will add those photos when I get a moment. Will add my fish curry if I took a pic. Might have been to busy eating it!
